Rare Wooden Buddhist Shrine ?? Laos (Attributed) Late 18th ?? Early 19th Century
Ref. : B3401C907
B3401C907
A finely hand-carved miniature wooden Buddhist shrine, attributed to the Lao cultural sphere (former Kingdom of Lan Xang), dating from the late 18th to the early 19th century.
The sculpture is carved from a single block of dense hardwood and depicts a seated Buddha in meditation housed within a steep architectural niche. The shrine is decorated with deeply carved geometric motifs, beaded borders and stylised architectural ornament inspired by traditional Lao temple decoration.
Unlike the more commonly encountered Thai devotional carvings, this example displays the distinctive provincial character associated with the former Lan Xang cultural area, with its expressive Buddha, compact proportions and architectural treatment.
Comparable examples are exceptionally scarce. Extensive comparison with museum collections and published auction archives suggests that this represents a rare regional devotional carving rather than a later tourist production.
A remarkable object for collectors of Southeast Asian art, Buddhist sculpture and early Lao devotional carvings.
